PROJECT 46 OF 188

Challenge

In 2013, Oxford Oracle partnered with an international development consultancy Consultants to advise on innovation and research commercialisation in Asia, a project funded by the EU-Asia Trade Cooperation Facility.

The Oracle's Solution

Oxford Oracle focused on research commercialisation work: a fact-finding mission was conducted to gain a better understanding of the local ecosystem and to transfer training programmes for representatives of universities and government ministries in Asia and Makassar. Following this, Oxford Oracle's consultants provided training and practical mentoring to over 100 representatives from 15 universities and two ministries for specific technology projects. Oxford Oracle partnered with an international development consultancy Consultants to advise on innovation and research commercialisation in Asia. The project was funded by the EU-Asia Trade Cooperation Facility (TCF), an EU-supported programme which works with Asian government organisations to enhance economic development in Asia. Oxford Oracle Innovation provided assistance in two areas: Oxford Oracle Innovation Hong Kong advised on science & technology parks, and Oxford Oracle advised on research commercialisation. The commercialisation work consisted of two phases. Oxford Oracle first conducted a fact-finding mission to understand the local ecosystem, and to shape a technology transfer training programme for representatives of universities and government ministries in Asia and Makassar. This was followed by a one-day study tour in Oxford, organised by Oxford Oracle to provide delegates with an overview of the Oxford Innovation Ecosystem. The second phase consisted of three further missions to Asia in 2014, during which Oxford Oracle consultants provided training and practical mentoring to over 100 representatives from 15 Universities and 2 Ministries. The mentoring involved on-site support for specific technology projects: project screening, market research, direct marketing and engagement with potential licensees. Oxford Oracle consultants briefed the participants, who made short presentations on their technologies. Consultants then assisted the participants to assess projects and conduct market research, followed by cold calling to target commercial partners. The mentoring set in train the process of commercialisation for specific technologies; at the same time, the trainees acquired new skills, so that they are now in a stronger position to commercialise technologies in the future.
