A UK Research University: Knowledge Exchange and Commercialisation Partnership

Challenge

Since 2015, Oxford Oracle has partnered with a prominent UK university to transform and accelerate its institutional research commercialisation activities. The university needed an in-depth review of its intellectual property (IP) portfolio, an updated, modernised IP policy to stimulate an entrepreneurial academic culture, and hands-on commercialisation support across diverse faculties. Key research facilities, including the Centre for Mass Spectrometry Imaging (CMSI), required strategic market-led scoping to translate analytical forensic services and diagnostic research into sustainable external commercial ventures.

The Oracle's Solution

Oxford Oracle delivered a multi-phase Knowledge Exchange and Commercialisation (KEC) programme tailored to the university's strategic objectives:

  • Conducted an exhaustive IP asset audit and patent portfolio review to identify and prioritise technologies with the greatest market potential.
  • Reviewed and redrafted the university's institutional IP policy and invention capture processes to streamline spin-out formation and industry collaboration.
  • Delivered a structured series of ten professional development workshops for academic researchers, instilling best practices in invention disclosure, patent protection, and IP valuation.
  • Provided embedded commercialisation guidance to the Research and Innovation Office (RIO), evaluating high-potential business opportunities for the Centre for Mass Spectrometry Imaging (CMSI) and preparing commercialisation cases for the university's Innovation Advisory Board (IAB).
  • Mentored commercialisation managers and facilitated the advancement of high-impact medical technologies, including a novel wound-care device, a pediatric health monitoring platform, and the establishment of a spin-out company based on Good Manufacturing Practice Research (GMPR) technology.

Consequential Impact

Oxford Oracle's strategic advisory and embedded mentoring enabled the university to reposition its research commercialisation activities in direct alignment with its institutional strategy. The partnership established a sustainable pipeline for capturing invention disclosures, accelerated licensing deals and spin-out formation, and embedded an enduring commercial culture across the academic and clinical research community.
