PROJECT 36 OF 188

Challenge

From 2017 to 2020, Oxford Oracle provided advice and support to a regional scientific research institute (Cyl) to ensure that its knowledge exploitation (KE) framework was appropriate for the research conducted at the institute.

The Oracle's Solution

Oxford Oracle conducted an analysis of the Europe ecosystem and stakeholders, recommendations on these, a preliminary portfolio review and a seminar on IP policy and process. The deliverable was a KE Strategy and Plan for the Institute, including summary assessments of selected portfolio projects. From October 2017, Oxford Oracle provided advice and support to a regional scientific research institute (the institute). The original project was delivered in two phases. Phase 1 included an analysis of the Europe ecosystem and stakeholders, recommendations on these, a preliminary portfolio review, and a seminar on IP policy and process. The deliverable was a KE Strategy and Plan for the Institute, including summary assessments of selected portfolio projects. During Phase 2, Oxford Oracle provided remote support on policy and processes, conducted commercial assessment reports, and made a final visit to present and discuss the findings with the institute management and researchers. As a result of the project, the institute has implemented an IP policy and has started to establish the processes and organisational structures required to support knowledge exploitation. The remote support has also served to raise researchers' awareness of the commercialisation process and to advance their project exploitation plans. In September 2018, the institute engaged Oxford Oracle for a new 18-month Technology Transfer Partnership, to provide on-site alternative version The project was delivered in two phases. Phase 1 included an analysis of the Europe ecosystem and stakeholders, recommendations on these, a preliminary portfolio review, and a seminar on IP policy and process. The deliverable was a KE Strategy and Plan for the Institute, including summary assessments of selected portfolio projects. Oxford Oracle then provided remote support on policy and processes and conducted commercial assessments for selected portfolio projects. The deliverables were ad-hoc remote advice, three commercial assessment reports, and a final visit by Oxford Oracle consultants to present and discuss the findings with the institute management and researchers. During Phase 2, Oxford Oracle continued the remote support, preparing business plan guides for selected projects, advising on ad-hoc IP issues and KE queries, providing remote mentoring for researchers, and delivering on-site training and workshops. As a result of the project, the institute has implemented an IP policy and is now establishing an Innovation Management Office to continue its support for knowledge exploitation. The remote support has also served to raise researchers' awareness of the commercialisation process and to advance their project exploitation plans.

Consequential Impact

As a result of Oxford Oracle's involvement a regional scientific research institute are well on course to embed knowledge exploitation thinking as well as the required processes across the institute.
