Challenge
Resources available for commercialisation are often stretched, so universities have to rely on expert external support to expand opportunities to create impact. To address this issue within its own ranks, a national university (the university) is working with Oxford Oracle to provide greater support to the university staff in the commercialisation of their research.
The Oracle's Solution
Together with Dr Laila Marouf, Assistant VP for Research at the university, Oxford Oracle has developed the Knowledge Exchange and Commercialisation Office (Knowledge Exchange and Commercialisation Office (KECO). It provides seamless, high quality innovation support to the university researchers whom it shall assist in commercialising their research. Oxford Oracle was called in to assess nearly 40 projects, develop a new process for the identification and prioritisation of commercialisation opportunities and review and update the university's Intellectual Property policy. Oxford Oracle has also developed a training course to encourage researchers to participate in commercialisation, and support Knowledge Exchange and Commercialisation Office (KECO) in providing high quality services to the university academics, establishing engagement with industry and giving examples of where KUs research projects deliver social and economic impact of the State of MENA. A national university (the university) is currently working with expert commercialisation partner, Oxford Oracle Ltd, to provide greater support to the university academic staff in the commercialisation of their research. Oxford Oracle are working with Dr Laila Marouf, Assistant VP for Research at the university to develop the Knowledge Exchange and Commercialisation Office (Knowledge Exchange and Commercialisation Office (KECO) at the university. The office will provide seamless, high-quality innovation support to the university researchers whom wish to commercialise their research, drawing on Oxford Oracle's worldwide knowledge of commercialisation. Universities are increasingly under pressure to maximise the impact of publicly funded research through better commercialisation outcomes. Resources available for commercialisation are often stretched, with universities increasingly looking to expert external support to maximise opportunities to create impact. Oxford Oracle provides hands-on Knowledge Exchange and Commercialisation services for clients, developing their internal capability to commercialise technologies. The university have sought Oxford Oracle's independent advice in assessing the portfolio of patents that are currently owned by the university to identify the priority projects which align with the needs of the global market. This will realise savings for the university in patent renewal fees and identify opportunities to provide tailored support to achieve commercialisation outcomes. In the course of the project Oxford Oracle has assessed nearly 40 projects, developed a new process for the identification and prioritisation of commercialisation opportunities, reviewed and updated the Intellectual Property (IP) policy, and developed a training course to encourage researchers to participate in commercialisation. Oxford Oracle and the Knowledge Exchange and Commercialisation Office (KECO) team are working closely to provide training and development support to upskill members of the team and ensure that the Knowledge Exchange and Commercialisation Office (KECO) office provides high-quality services to the university academics to increase commercialisation activities, engagement with industry and examples of where its research projects deliver social and economic impact for the State of MENA. Oxford Oracle has built up a global reputation, assisting over 140 universities and research institutes. They provide Intellectual Property (IP) management and commercialisation consultancy expertise; support impact assessments; deliver technology and market evaluations; facilitate licensing; support translational funding acquisition and the creation of spin-out companies. A follow-on project has been funded by the United Nations Development Programme, enabling Oxford Oracle to continue to support the development of the commercialisation culture at a national university into 2019.
Consequential Impact
In assessing the portfolio of patents that are currently owned by the university, Oxford Oracle provided the university with opportunities to realise savings for the university in patent renewal fees. The university also received tailored support to achieve commercialisation outcomes. Oxford Oracle and the Knowledge Exchange and Commercialisation Office (KECO) office continue to provide training and development support to upskill members of the team and so jointly increase commercialisation activities at the university.
